Cyber Thieves Never Sleep

How Safe Are You Really?

Can you count the number of passwords you recycle on one hand? Do you use social media or streaming networks regularly? Have you ever logged into a public Wi-Fi network? If so, you may want to consider incorporating the following cybersecurity tips to lower your risk and protect yourself from fraud.

  1. Use and Maintain Antivirus Software and a Firewall – Antivirus software and firewalls can help protect your devices from malware and cybercriminals looking to steal your personal and financial information.
  2. Utilize Strong Passwords – Create a new password for different sites, at least 15 to 16 characters long. Avoid using personal information such as your birth date or a pets’ name that can be easily found on social media. Substitute letters with numbers, punctuation marks, or symbols.
  3. Double Check Email Attachments and Sender – Cybercriminals can alter return addresses so that the message looks like it came from someone other than the sender. Be cautious of unsolicited attachments, even from people you know. Verify the message is legitimate by contacting the person who sent it.
  4. Buying Online – Look for “https” and a security padlock symbol in the URL bar and click on it, check if it takes you to a site security certificate. Use services such as PayPal or a credit card that have buyer protection.
