Important Message from TFCU Regarding Social Justice

Dear Fellow El Pasoans,

The late James Baldwin once said, “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” These past weeks our country has gone through a much-needed conversation on race and the changes that are needed to create equality for all. In late May, we saw the public killing of Mr. George Floyd at the hands of a police officer. This event was heartbreaking and unacceptable. This is one event in a centuries’ long series of occurrences that degrade the human spirit. This has ignited a long-overdue global and national dialogue about something that is essential to our country’s values: “Justice for all.”

One of TFCU’s Core Values states the importance of Leadership. Many times, LEADING means being vocal when we see that things are not right. America has a long and proud history of civil rights activism that has slowly made progress. TFCU will not be silent during this historic progress on the much-needed movement of justice for all. We must work together as a community to dismantle the systemic racism in this country that has affected the Black and Brown communities for decades.

Credit unions were built upon the philosophy of “people helping people,” and it is our responsibility to stand up when injustices are present. A significant part of addressing systematic racism is doing an introspection of what we do in our homes, workplaces, and communities. TFCU is committed to help make these necessary changes in our community as much as we can. In the next couple of weeks, we will be announcing special initiatives and partnerships with local organizations that are focused on creating opportunities of equality and eliminating systemic racism. We have also joined the Credit Union DEI Collective Pledge which upholds its mission to “bring forth social, economic, political, and legal justice for combating centuries of violent oppression and systemic racism everywhere.” This collective also has a commitment to “listen, learn, advocate, and amplify the voices of the most marginalized and vulnerable members of our community in accordance with our cooperative principles, to create a better society for all.” For more information on the CU DEI Collective, we invite you to visit

We also know that to create a society where minorities are valued and represented, we must lead by example. Last year, TFCU started an initiative to make significant strides in the areas of diversity. In November of 2019, TFCU partnered with Mr. Ronaldo Hardy, Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer for Credit Union Strategic Planning, to create a long-term Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiative for our organization. Our goal is to have our organization make DEI part of our DNA and promote the importance of these values in our community. We encourage all industry sectors in our city to join us in creating DEI programs in their organizations as well. We cannot make changes to help our Black and Brown communities without giving them a seat at the decision-making table.

Racial justice and equality are not political issues; they are human rights issues. We cannot let apathy and hate continue to destroy our communities. The time for change is now. We invite you to join us in helping face these challenges and create the change that our Black and Brown communities deserve.
